SEO for business success

Elizabeth Walsh is a website designer and experienced search engine optimisation specialist with a proven track record of success.

Why is SEO important?

In order to be successfully found on the internet, a website needs to be designed and developed with SEO as an integral and essential element right at the very beginning of the development process. This is in order to allow the Search Engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc,) to index a website appropriately.

How does SEO work?

There are a number of SEO techniques required to achieve successful results and the aim is to gain a top front page listing wherever possible.

Here are some examples:

  • It is important to identify what 'key words and phrases' genuinely describe the services and products offered by the website owner or business. Once established, these key words and phrases are used throughout the website in their correct context.

  • Authentic incoming and outgoing links are hugely beneficial for SEO success. Essentially the Search Engines crawl every page of every website on the internet, looking for appropriate links which add genuine value to the purpose of the website. There is a term known as 'link farming', i.e. buying links from people who wish to exchange links for either money or a reciprocal link, and they are to be avoided at all cost - in fact they can damage the integrity of the SEO of a website which may result in losing out in the Search Engine listings.

  • Correct coding: A professional website designer will use correct and compliant web coding to build your website. They will also check the code validation with W3C* to ensure the website performs as well as possible across all browsers and platforms.

There are many other techniques used by professional SEO experts and as in all industries there are good and ethical methods, and conversely there are bad practices too.

What is Elizabeth's take on this?

Elizabeth's advice is to be circumspect about so called 'experts' who claim to be able to get your website to the top of Google (and other Search Engines). At best this is a dubious statement because no one can genuinely claim that they can achieve this. Google keeps very quiet about their ranking criteria and their algorithms are not published for all to see. On the whole it's a fair system based on merit, and if your website is worthy of a top or high slot then it will usually get one. Remember - not everyone can be number one!

Instead Elizabeth can and does make sure that she uses legitimate SEO techniques to achieve the best possible results. This takes time and a lot of attention to detail - not least understanding your business or personal aims - which she will discuss with you during your first (and subsequent) meetings.

So how does Elizabeth achieve good SEO results?

It's all in the detail... and fully understanding her client's goals. It may be that she will ask your permission to edit your text for SEO purposes to ensure that there is enough relevant content to merit a high position in the Search Engine listings. She may suggest that you discuss incoming links with other businesses which add benefit to yours (and vice versa). She may recommend a certain layout and page structure, or the use of key information in a particular way. Naturally she wants her client's websites to achieve a front page top listing without having to resort to expensive Pay-Per-Click or sponsored advertising, and she works diligently to achieve this.

Why shouldn't you use so called SEO 'experts' who target you directly?

Well you could... and once you own a website you will get emails and calls from people purporting to be SEO experts - and they use all kinds of sales pitch scare mongering trickery to get you to feel insecure about the performance of your website.

Elizabeth is often mildly amused when she gets calls like this and invariably they haven't even looked at her website (to discover she is an SEO specialist herself). Many of them just find your contact details online and send out massive mail shots or use call centres to make multiple calls.

The scary thing is these people want access to your website where they may (or may not) use less than ethical methods to achieve a quick result which is highly unlikely to be sustained

They can't all be that bad!

Of course there will be some legitimate and effective people out there who possibly can work wonders. But Elizabeth would far rather have the satisfaction of providing SEO as an integral part of her website design and development service and save her clients a good deal of money in the process.

Can Elizabeth help me if she hasn't designed my website?

If you don't need to have a new website designed by Elizabeth but wish to have advice about the search engine optimisation performance of your existing website please contact her to ask for a quote for an individual SEO report.

This is not something Elizabeth undertakes lightly as she prefers to work for her own clients, but in some cases she can offer straightforward advice in the form of a written report. You can then ask your own website designer to implement the suggestions she makes. However, she can't be held accountable if her advice is not followed correctly, but she will check and advise you accordingly if your website technician hasn't followed the instructions she provided.

There is a charge for this service and a full report can cost anything from £300 - £1000 depending on the size and content of your website. So her advice in the first instance would be to call her for a chat first and she can give you an idea of what might be involved.
